RODRIGUEZ FERNANDEZ, Zenén. Complications of the appendicectomy due to acute appendicitis. Rev Cubana Cir [online]. 2010, vol.49, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2945.

INTRODUCTION. Appendicectomy due to acute appendicitis is the commonest urgency operation in surgical services but it is not exempt from complications conditions by not much known factors, whose determination could decrease the morbidity and mortality due to this cause. The aim of present research was to identify some factors related to appearance of complications in patients underwent appendicectomy due to acute appendicitis. METHODS. A prospective, observational and descriptive study was conducted in 560 appendicectomy patients histologically diagnosed with acute appendicitis, discharged from the General Surgery Service of the "Saturnino Lora" Teaching Hospital of Santiago de Cuba province during 2006. RESULTS. The 21,6% suffered some type of complication mainly a infection in operative site. Complications increased in relation to age and were more frequent in patients presenting with associated diseases, with a more precarious status, a longer preoperative course time, as well as in the more advanced histopathological ways of infection including those 4 deceased. Appearance of such complications may be the cause of re-interventions and the length of hospital stay. CONCLUSIONS. Early diagnosis of disease and the immediate appendicectomy using an appropriate surgical technique prevent the appearance of postsurgical complications and determine the success of the only effective treatment against the commonest infection provoking the acute abdomen, whose prognosis depends mainly and among other factors on the preoperative course time and on the phase of the morbid process at intervention.
