Resumen

Informed consent is defined as the conformity of a patient with a change in the body by means of medical and surgical treatment with curative purpose, and made in accordance with the regulations of medical sciences, which requirements are information, understanding, voluntariness, competence and consent; however, it is frequent to observe in the current medical practice the use of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures without complying with those requirements. The following review aims to offer professionals the basics about informed consent, enabling them to address the ethical dilemmas that arise in Obstetrics and Gynecology to ensure excellence in health services. It is concluded that informed consent is an extremely valuable tool in the doctor-patient relationship and has become a right of the patient and a duty of physicians
