RODRIGUEZ GUERRERO, Katiuska; CLAVERIA CLARK, Rafael Alberto  y  PENA SISTO, Maritza. Some clinical-epidemiological characteristics of Down syndrome and their effects on the oral cavity. MEDISAN [online]. 2015, vol.19, n.10, pp. 1272-1282. ISSN 1029-3019.

The clinical-epidemiological characteristics of the Down syndrome that have effects on the oral cavity are treated in this work. This non inherited irreversible congenital condition results from the trisomy 21 due to the meiotic, mitotic non disjunction, or due to unbalanced translocation of this pair; with a frequency of 1 in 800 000 inhabitants and it is increased with the maternal age. People that suffer from this condition usually present certain anomalies in the craneofacial shape and in the oral cavity; these last ones affect either the hard or soft structures: tongue, mucous membrane of mouth, lips, salivary glands, soft palate and eruption of teeth (as for size, shape, number, position and delay in the time of the eruption). This clinical and stomatological manifestations, characteristic of this systemic condition, facilitate the emergence of other oral diseases

Palabras clave : Down syndrome; oral cavity anomalies; oral manifestations; periodontal disease.
