RODRIGUEZ-CUELLAR, Yaima; MENA-SILVA, Paola Andrea y WONG-VAZQUEZ, Lester. Diagnosis and management of allergic reactions to local anesthetics by dental students in pre-professional practices. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2023, vol.27, suppl.1 Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 1561-3194.
ABSTRACT Introduction: local anesthetics are used for different dental procedures, although allergic reactions are infrequent, the dental professional should be prepared to deal with any type of situation that may arise. Objective: to analyze the level of knowledge on the diagnosis and management of allergic reactions to local anesthetics in the dental office of tenth semester students of the Dental Care Unit, UNIANDES. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out with tenth semester students in clinical practice in the Dental Care Unit of the Dentistry course at the Los Andes Autonomous Regional University, Ambato, Ecuador. The universe and the sample coincided, integrated by 75 students. Results: it was determined that the students who were part of the study have a medium level of knowledge, with an average of 55 % of correct answers. In addition, it is evidenced that they have deficiencies in the procedure to be followed in case of an allergic reaction, since only 36 % know that adrenaline should be applied. Conclusions: most of the students have a good knowledge of the diagnosis of allergic reactions, however, they have deficiencies in the management of this type of emergencies due to the lack of experience in the treatment of these. Emphasis should be placed on the study of the interventions that the dental professional should follow to provide patient safety in dental treatment.
