Resumen

DEL TORO-CAMBARA, Alexander et al. Chronobiology of Acute Myocardial Infarction. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.4  Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction:

knowledge of cardiovascular chronobiology is a better approach to the diagnosis and treatment of acute myocardial infarction.

Objective:

to describe the chronobiological behaviour of acute myocardial infarction and its differences taking into account the sex of the patients.

Methods:

observational, analytical and cross-sectional study of patients treated at the "Abel Santamaría" Hospital, from January to December 2021. A total of 260 patients with a diagnosis of this disease were included intentionally. The variables collected were: sex, cardiovascular risk factors, time of day of onset of symptoms and month of occurrence of the event.

Results:

hypertension (75,8 %) was the most prevalent risk factor. The most frequent time of day for the presentation of cardiovascular symptoms was between 6:00 and 8:59 am (44,79 %). The months with the highest frequency were May and December (10,44 %). Sex determined statistically significant differences (p<0.05) in the times of symptom occurrence. For females, the time from 12:00 to 2:59 am showed a higher frequency compared to males (10,5 % vs. 0,6 %). From 12:00 to 2:59 pm few events occur in females compared to those occurring in males (2,3 % vs 9,8 %).

Conclusions:

Acute myocardial infarction showed a higher frequency of symptom onset in the morning hours and in May and December in the series studied. Sex determined differences in this chronobiological behaviour.
