Introduction:

the use of biomarkers in breast cancer has made it possible to personalise treatment and prognosis.

Objective:

to identify the association between molecular markers and clinicopathological factors in breast cancer in Pinar del Río.

Methods:

An observational, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective probabilistic study was carried out on 384 patients, of which 96 patients with breast cancer diagnosed between January 2007 and December 2011, attended at the Third Congress Oncology Patient Care Centre, were selected. Clinical, anatomopathological, biomolecular and follow-up variables were studied.

Results:

The estrogen receptor subtype predominated with 70,8 % followed by progesterone receptors with 56,3 %. Of the women, 34,4 % were in the 51-60 age group. Associations were found between recurrence and estrogen receptor (p=0,03), progestagen receptor (p=0,01) and HER-2 (p=0,02) subtypes; the latter two also showed association with metastasis, with an OR=23,92 for HER-2 positive.

Conclusions:

no association was found between the clinical characteristics studied and the molecular subtypes. Tumours with HER-2 expression tended to have a greater dispersion of their diameters. Recurrence was associated with all subtypes, while metastasis was associated with progesterone receptor-positive and HER-2-positive subtypes, the latter increasing the risk of metastasis.

Palabras clave : BIOMARKERS, TUMOR; BREAST NEOPLASMS; RECEPTORS.
