Introduction:

Metabolic Syndrome is a serious problem, increasing its incidence, associated with Diabetes Mellitus.

Objective:

To characterise the Metabolic Syndrome in type 2 diabetic patients in the Diabetic Care Centre of Pinar Del Rio in the period January-September 2020.

Methods:

An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out in the Diabetic Care Centre of Pinar Del Rio, January-September 2021. The universe consisted of 88 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and the sample consisted of 44. The information extracted from the medical records was processed using SPSS version 22, calculating frequencies and the chi-squared test (X2), which was significant if p<0.05. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed using NCEP-ATP III criteria.

Results:

Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in 70,45 % of patients, predominantly female (67,74 %) and aged between 60 and 69 years, with a preponderance of type 2 diabetic patients, predominantly postmenopausal women. Arterial Hypertension, abdominal obesity and elevated triglycerides were the most frequent components and uric acid and Aspartate Amino Transferase, the highest biochemical parameters.

Conclusions:

Metabolic syndrome appears frequently in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with elevated parameters such as uric acid and ASAT.
