PEREZ-GARCIA, Ariel Oscar. Surgical and clinical characterization of patients intervened for adrenal tumors. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.4 Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 1561-3194.
Introduction:
the incidence of adrenal tumors is low in the general population. Most adrenal gland tumors are functional and present clinically as cortical hyperfunction syndromes when it affects the function of the cortical layers and as a pheochromocytoma if it involves the medulla.
Objective:
to describe the clinical and surgical characteristics of patients operated on for adrenal tumors.
Methods:
an observational, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Clinical Surgical University Hospital in the Santa Clara municipality, Villa Clara, between January 2012 and December 2022. The sample consisted of 38 patients who underwent surgery for gland tumors. adrenals.
Results:
female patients predominated (63,2 %), between 34 and 49 years of age (39,5 %). Ultrasound and tomography were used in 60,5 % of the patients. Incidental diagnosis was more frequent (65,8 %), with a predominance of benign tumors (71,1 %) and larger than 6 cm (47,4 %). Cortical tumors predominated (39,5 %), with pheochromocytoma being the most frequent finding (26,3 %). The most performed intervention was adrenalectomy (92,1 %).
Conclusions:
women between 34 and 49 years predominated, the most used diagnostic means were abdominal ultrasound and computerized axial tomography. The most frequent type of diagnosis was adrenal incidentaloma, while the diagnosed tumors were mostly benign. Regarding the origin, cortical tumors were more frequent, and they presented predominantly on the right side.
