Resumen

RODRIGUEZ CHICAIZA, Alexandra Belén  y  ACOSTA YANSAPANTA, Estefanía Alexandra. Occupational Hazards in Nursing Professionals. Rev. cuban. salud trabajo [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.1  Epub 01-Abr-2023. ISSN 1991-9395.

Introduction:

In the health care setting, nursing professionals are exposed to dissimilar occupational risks due to the complexity of their work, which negatively impacts their physical and mental health, and the quality of the service they provide. The attention and care of these personnel is essential due to the important role they play in society.

Objective:

To carry out a bibliographic review of the research developed in the last 5 years on the occupational risks to which nursing personnel are exposed.

Methods:

Articles published in the period 2017-2022 on occupational risks in nursing staff linked to care services in health facilities are included. The search was performed in the bibliographic databases PubMed, SciELO, Dialnet, EBSCO and Google Scholar.

Results:

Thirty-six articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria. A total of 88.9% corresponded to original articles and 11.1% to literature review articles. Of the total number of original articles, 71.9% were based on a quantitative methodology, 25% on a qualitative methodology and 3.1% on a mixed methodology. There is a predominance of studies developed in Latin American countries, focused on the diagnosis of occupational hazards (84.3%) in nursing personnel linked to the health care field, and only 15.7% are oriented to intervention. It is found that these professionals are exposed during their work to physical, biological, chemical, ergonomic and psychosocial risks, especially in critical sectors.

Conclusions:

It is necessary to increase the production of research that is oriented to the design and implementation of intervention strategies, and that also contemplates primary health care.
