Resumen

SUAREZ IZNAGA, Rodolfo; QUEVEDO DE ARMAS, Lázaro  y  DURAN GONZALEZ, Yaquelín. Rectal insufflation ozone therapy as a therapeutic option in patients with intercostal Herpes Zoster. Rev. CENIC Cienc. Biol [online]. 2020, vol.51, n.1, pp. 48-56.  Epub 01-Abr-2020. ISSN 2221-2450.

Herpes Zoster is an infection that develops when the Varicella Zoster virus is reactivated from its dormant state in a dorsal root ganglion. The pourpose was to evaluate the effect of rectal insufflation ozone therapy in patients with intercostal Herpes Zoster. A prospective descriptive investigation of cases with intercostal Herpes Zoster was performed to which ozone therapy was applied without randomization, or control group. The selected sample was 110 patients with a clinical diagnosis of the disease, 1 to 5 days of evolution and without antiviral treatment. The period studied was from January 2014 to December 2018. The patients underwent rectal insufflation ozone therapy with volumes between 100 and 150 mL and concentrations of 20 to 25 µg / mL, in staggered doses, for 20 sessions. The variables used were: sex, age group, response to ozone therapy and side effects of the treatment. To determine the existence of a statistically significant relationship in the response variable to treatment with ozone therapy according to demographic characteristics, the Chi-square test with a significance level α = 0.05 was used, being positive if p <0.05. Female patients and those over 60 were the most affected groups. The excellent treatment response predominated in patients of any sex. In all patients the skin lesions disappeared completely without sequelae of bacterial superinfection. The main side effect of the treatment was abdominal colic. Rectal insufflation ozone therapy was an effective and safe therapeutic option in patients diagnosed with intercostal Herpes Zoster, 1 to 5 days later, who did not receive antiviral treatment.

Palabras clave : Herpes Zoster intercostal; ozone therapy.
