Introduction:

an infection constitutes the proliferation of enough bacteria in different tissues. Surgical site infections are those that originate as a result of a surgical act.

Objective:

to characterize patients with infection of the surgical site.

Methods:

a cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out in patients with surgical site infection, treated at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital from 2017 to 2018. The sample was 242 patients.

Results:

the mean age was (55.96) and the female sex represented (54.5%). The contaminated clean surgical wound and the superficial surgical site infection were the most represented (44.2% and 57% respectively). A considerable group of patients were readmitted due to a surgical site infection (41.3%). Most organ and space infections were preceded by dirty surgical wounds. The largest number of surgical site infections occurred in the third quarter of the year.

Conclusions:

patients between 30 and 60 years old, female, clean contaminated surgical wound, and superficial surgical site infection were the most represented. A considerable group of patients were readmitted for a surgical site infection. Most organ and space infections were preceded by dirty surgical wounds. The largest number of surgical site infections occurred in the third quarter of the year.
