TAMARGO BARBEITO, Teddy Osmin; JIMENEZ PANEQUE, Rosa Eugenia; GUTIERREZ ROJAS, Ángela Rosa  e  MORA DIAZ, Isabel. Hospital stay adjusted to assessment of efficiency in an Internal Medicine Service. Rev cubana med [online]. 2009, vol.48, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-302X.

Introduction: Assessment of hospital performance has emerged like a need in any health system. Average stay is the more used indicator. Objectives: To identify factors influencing in hospital stay and to assess the ability of the less expected stay in ineffectiveness detection. Methods: We made a retrospective and descriptive study. In statistical analysis we used average, mean, and standard deviation (SD) to sum up both the quantitative and the qualitative variables; percentages; variance analysis of simple classification, multiple linear regression analysis, and ROC (?) curve. Results: Variables influenced on hospital stay were: age, severity rate, main diagnosis at discharge represented by digestive diseases, and cardiovascular and digestive diseases interactions with the severity rate. In assessment of the "less expected observed stay" indicator to predict problems related to efficiency of hospital care, we found an area of 0.747 under ROC curve. Conclusions: The "less expected observed stay" difference is able to detect ineffectiveness in hospital care, and give valuable information for make a decision in Internal Medicine Service.
