The present work is part of the research "Current tendencies of university formation: a look from pedagogy." This study highlights the fact that the current demand as to education lies on the need to improve the educational process to achieve a university training of higher quality. In this sense, the main goal is to characterize learning based on problems (LBP) and teaching by projects (TP) as tendencies in university formation. The methods employed are of theoretical character and among the main results are the grounds on the emergence of LBP and TP, the definitions proposed by different authors and their main characteristics. Moreover, the roles played by professors and students are emphasized and some methodological elements for their further application in the teaching-learning process are described. Finally, its importance and the current development achieved are analyzed
