Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bertoni) is a species of the genus Stevia, Asteraceae family native of tropical South America. This plant is considered medicinal, as several studies show that it may have beneficial effects on type II diabetes, it has glycosides with no calorie sweetening properties. Many of researchers on chemical and biological properties have been made in the recent past. Several countries have started commercial cultivation. The published literature on this crop is very sparse, so this work devotes an effort to compile the literature and review the status of research and development of cropping systems. Cuba is a country that has potential for Stevia cultivation, but, unlike other countries in the region where it is farmed, companies have been formed and have become true processes of industrialization. In our country has not yet has introduced the cultivation of Stevia production in agricultural scale neither industrial. Stevia for its therapeutic properties may contribute to human health, but also has other applications as cosmetic use, soil improver and supplement animal diets, among others
