RIVERON RUIZ, Yanaisa; RODRIGUEZ HERNANDEZ, Sorania; MACHADO HERNANDEZ, Enrique  e  ORTEGA DIAZ, Lorelei. Comparison of conventional LASIK and aspheric LASIK in the treatment of ametropia. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2012, vol.25, n.2, pp. 218-225. ISSN 0864-2176.

Objective: to compare the results obtained with the LASIK using both conventional and aspheric patterns to correct ametropies and to evaluate the contrast sensitivity after these two procedures. Methods: a comparative and prospective study was conducted in 64 patients who attended the refractive surgery outpatient service of “Ramon Pando Ferrer” Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology. They were randomly distributed in two groups for both procedures. Several variables were studied such as: uncorrected visual acuity, best corrected visual acuity, aberration and contrast sensitivity at photopic conditions. Results: uncorrected visual acuity improved 8 lines in the Snellen’s chart, without significant differences between both techniques. The mean spherical aberration was lower after the aspheric treatment (0.30). Reduced contrast sensitivity was observed after the conventional treatment. Conclusions: both surgical techniques keep good uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity after surgery under photopic conditions. The visual quality reaches better results with the aspheric treatment due to lower spherical aberration induction and better contrast sensitivity after the surgery.
