Normalization is an activity by which some pre-established criteria are applied to the carrying out of an activity. Health sciences libraries are characterized according to their peculiarities. The need to normalize their activity is analysed and the main projects of normalization and standardization in this type of libraries are studied. Some general standards that may be applied to medical libraries are included, and the current situation of the normalization of the activity in digital and virtual libraries is approached. Finally, some of the most representative organizations worldwide in the field of libraries, documentation and normalization are mentioned.
