Introduction:

primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is an optic neuropathy that causes irreversible blindness, identifying its risk factors contributes to early diagnosis and treatment.

Objective:

to identify risk factors for POAG.

Method:

a case-control study was carried out in patients diagnosed with POAG, from the Jimmy Hirtzel Polyclinic in Bayamo, from February 2011 to February 2014. In the cases, 114 patients were studied, the same sample in the controls (proportion 1: 1). Variables were studied: POAG, age, sex, skin color, positive family history and comorbidity.

Results:

people with a positive family history showed a 5 times greater risk (OR 4.79), those 40 years or older were four times more likely to develop POAG (OR 3.76). Ocular hypertension, hypertension (HT) and Diabetes mellitus were risk factors, (OR of 3.75, 2.42 and 2.38), respectively.

Conclusions:

the age of 40 years or more, positive family history, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and ocular hypertension were risk factors, but not sex, skin color, migraine, and high myopia.
