Introduction: in the Medical Sciences postgraduate education has a great expertise in a particular modality: specialization, with programs for training specialists tested for years and who have accumulated a great expertise. The training of second degree specialists represents a quality standard in the Cuban universities of medical sciences. During the academic year 2012-2013 a cross-sectional descriptive research was carried out. Objective: to design a strategy for contributing with the development of the training process of second degree specialists in Pinar del Rio University of Medical Sciences. Methods: theoretical and empirical ones. Results: the strategy was designed starting from its mission and perspective, including five research tasks to be carried out during four stages, each of which having specific actions and ways of validation, permitting to meet the aimed goal. Conclusions: a strategy was designed to contribute with the development of the training process of second degree specialists in the Pinar Del Rio University of Medical Sciences, taking into account the general fundamentals of the postgraduate education of the National Health System and the legal documentations that support the development of this process.
