SIXTO FUENTES, Sahely  e  MARQUEZ MARRERO, Juan Lázaro. Historical trends for the process of skill development in ophthalmology professionals. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.6, pp. 1080-1089. ISSN 1561-3194.

Introduction: the process of skill development in ophthalmology professionals is a challenge to be faced due to the psycho-pedagogical elements involved in this activity and the advances this specialty has achieved. Objective: to characterize the historical trends for the development of skills in ophthalmology professionals.  Material and method: documentary review was used as an empirical method, along with the logical procedures of thinking, induction-deduction and synthesis-analysis. Results: the international trends found were: separation of the schools of medicine from the rest of the universities, managing of postgraduate syllabuses for the ministry of Public Health, implementation of curriculums based on competences for residents’ programs of all medical specialties, and the use of simulation for the training of professional skills. In Cuba, in addition to this last one, there are other ways: empirical training and out of these curricular frameworks the professional skills before the emergence of residences, adding the improvement of syllabuses and schedules of the specialty. Conclusions: the process of skill development in ophthalmology professionals has been influenced by social transformations and the progress of ophthalmology sciences, where there are trends that characterize its historical evolution.
