Introduction:

self-esteem problems constitute one of the main reasons for consultation in the units for students’ counseling, especially in medical sciences; however, in the Cuban context there are no validated instruments for the correct evaluation. Self-esteem problems are a frequent reason for consultation in Student Counseling Unit in universities, especially in the medical sciences, seriously affecting academic performance and stimulating school desertion; however, in the Cuban context there are no validated instruments for their correct evaluation.

Objective:

to determine the reliability and construct validity of the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory in medical students from Pinar del Rio University of Medical Sciences during 2019.

Methods:

observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in medical students from Pinar del Rio University of Medical Sciences during 2019. The sample was comprised of 400 Cuban students from the six academic years of the medicine major. The Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory was applied.

Results:

very high values of Cronbach's Alpha (0,91) were obtained, that is an indication of a high reliability of the instrument. In the factor analysis carried out, five dimensions or factors were taken, in correspondence with the results reached by other studies; finding adequate correlations among the items belonging to each factor.

Conclusions:

Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory showed adequate metric qualities when validated in the Cuban context, proving to be reliable and with a multifactorial structure in correspondence with the results of previous studies.
