BETANCOURT-REYES, Gilberto Lázaro  e  BETANCOURT-BETANCOURT, Gilberto de Jesús. Predictors for the success of noninvasive mechanical ventilation. Rev Ciencias Médicas [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.4  Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 1561-3194.

ABSTRACT

Introduction:

only a few national studies provide a solid understanding of the factors that influence in the success of noninvasive ventilation.

Objective:

to identify the success factors in the use of noninvasive ventilation in the critical care units at the “Manuel Ascunce Domenech” hospital, from october 1st, 2020 to october 1st, 2021.

Methods:

a monocentric, observational, descriptive and correlational study was carried out in the critical care units of the “Manuel Ascunce Domenech” hospital, in the Camagüey province, from october 1st, 2020 to october 1st, 2021, based on the general criteria and a work algorithm previously validated in national consensus as part of a doctoral research. The universe was made up of 198 patients and the sample was made up of 176 patients. Statistical methods of association of variables and binary logistic regression were used using the SPSS statistical program.

Results:

there was predominance in advanced ages and the male sex. The main causes of respiratory failure were lower respiratory infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Worsening level of consciousness and leakage were the most commonly seen complications. Predictors of success were identified for noninvasive ventilation, where arterial oxygen pressure greater than 80 mmHg was the best predictor variable.

Conclusions:

it was possible to characterize the behavior of noninvasive mechanical ventilation and identified the factors associated with the success of this ventilatory technique.
