BENNETT ESCALONA, Ana Flavia; HERNANDEZ CEDENO, Eniuska e LOPEZ BAUTA, Adis Aymee. Adolescent mothers` parental care in the first year of life of their children. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2022, vol.18, n.36, pp. 204-230. Epub 01-Nov-2022. ISSN 1817-4078.
The aim of the present study is to characterize the parental care of adolescent mothers for their first-year-old infants to promote the development of the attachment relationship. A mixed sequential explanatory research design was used. The quantitative phase was a descriptive correlational study and it was used a non-probabilistic sample of 20 adolescent mother-infant dyads. For the qualitative phase of the research, a phenomenological design was used with a sample of maximum variation. The results show that adolescent mothers have difficulties in promoting the development of secure attachment bonds in their infants. The characteristics of the environment and of the mother influence the attachment that the boy or girl in the study develops. Among the former are the support of the family and the maintenance of the marital relationship of both parents and among the latter, the memories that adolescent mothers have about the care received during childhood. The adolescent mothers in the study present positive experiences in the interaction with their infant. They maintain high levels of parental stress that interfere with their ability to manifest behavior that is sensitive to the child's emotional dysregulation. They manifest intrusive behaviors during joint activity with their child and difficulties as mediators in the child's communication with unknown people.
