This contribution analyzes the political route in education that has been carried out in Costa Rica during the last two decades to develop skills for the work in declining educational quality in terms of school performance and promotion of research. The objective was to analyze the narrow margin imposed by the productive sectors and the labor demand in scientific production and the integral development of education. Thus, from the author's point of view, the relationship between the development of knowledge and the valuation -economically- of that knowledge is considered, based on educational strategies limited to the development of low or medium occupation positions. It is concluded that in order to direct and balance the balance, investment in research and innovation must be invested, and with this, promote cognitive, ethical and social development in childhood and adolescence, to adequately link education and the world of work.
