NAVARRO MACHADO, Victor Rene et al. Results of a student scientific group oriented to “Training and research in vital support during emergencies and disasters”. Educ Med Super [online]. 2022, vol.36, n.2  Epub 30-Jun-2022. ISSN 1561-2902.

Introduction:

The development of student scientific groups in universities is a necessity in terms of new knowledge and a more comprehensive training.

Objective:

To describe the main results of a student scientific group oriented to training and research in vital support during emergencies and disasters throughout its first three years of work.

Methods:

A descriptive and prospective research was carried out, between 2017 and 2019, in the University of Medical Sciences of Cienfuegos. The study universe consisted of all the students (25) and tutor teachers (6) who were part of the group. Document review, brainstorming and focus group were used as techniques.

Results:

The annual plan for research training was differentiated by academic year and needs. Increasingly complex topics on research methodology and others related to the major were taught. In each academic year, the proposed tasks were completed. The students carried out 29 researches (13.8 % were published and 48.3 % received awards), presented in three student scientific forums and twelve other events. Scientific production grew progressively both in terms of quantity and quality.

Conclusions:

The results of the student scientific group are positive. The design of an extracurricular, modular and collective participation training program on research methodology and medical topics related to the tutors' project facilitated the acquisition of research skills by the students, as well as the achievement of good scientific activity indicators, except for the number of publications.
