MORALES MARTINEZ, Ignacio; MOLINA LEON, Orlando  e  ECHAVARRIA FRAGA, Diego Rosendo. Results in the diagnosis and treatment of choledocholithiasis. Acta méd centro [online]. 2020, vol.14, n.1, pp. 120-125.  Epub 31-Mar-2020. ISSN 2709-7927.

Introduction:

choledocholithiasis has been pointed out as the main use of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography since its introduction by McCune in 1968; following the development of laparoscopic surgery its diagnostic and therapeutic potential boosted.

Objective:

to describe the use of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in the diagnosis and treatment of choledocholithiasis.

Methods:

an observational, descriptive study was conducted in patients aged 18 years and older who had the procedure performed between March 2017 and January 2019; the medical records of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of choledocholithiasis were reviewed.

Results:

the most affected age group was from 51 to 60 years of age, with a predominance of females. Jaundice was the main clinical condition (25 patients, 53.19%). Secondary choledocyan lithiasis predominated (19, 40.42%). Therapeutic effectiveness was achieved in 85.11% of cases; the main cause of failure was lithiasis greater than 1.5 cm.

Conclusions:

cholangiopancreatography was effective in most of the cases diagnosed with choledocholithiasis in which secondary choledocyan lithiasis prevailed as the possible origin of the condition and in which there was greater involvement of the female sex and the 51-60 age group, with jaundice as the most frequent clinical condition.
