JIMENEZ RODRIGUEZ, Yuniesky et al. Salivary gland tumors. Five years of experience. Acta méd centro [online]. 2021, vol.15, n.2, pp. 229-239.  Epub 30-Jun-2021. ISSN 2709-7927.

Introduction:

salivary gland neoplasms are rare. According to the literature they correspond to three and up to 6% of head and neck tumors and 0.6% of all neoplasms. They are an important variety of lesions with dissimilar biological behaviors that settle in the salivary glands.

Objective:

to describe the histopathological behavior of the cases treated at the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Hospital during five years and the treatment received for these neoplasms in the population.

Methods:

a retrospective descriptive study of neoplasms of salivary origin in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the "Arnaldo Milián Castro" Hospital of Villa Clara between January 2014 and December 2018 was carried out. Variables such as location, histological type, degree of malignancy and therapeutic modality were studied.

Results:

a total of 189 patients attended were reviewed, with a total of 189 lesions. There was a higher incidence in women (54.49%), 77.7% of the total neoplasms were located in the parotid gland, pleomorphic adenoma constituted 54.49% of all neoplasms, 75.18% of neoplasms were benign in all locations, mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the predominant malignant tumor (32.69%) and subtotal parotidectomy was the most frequently performed surgical treatment.

Conclusions:

there was a predominance of benign neoplasms, the parotid was the most affected gland, with a diagnostic variety of 22 different histological variants. Subtotal parotidectomy was the most performed surgical treatment.

Palavras-chave : salivary gland neoplasms; pleomorphic adenoma; mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
