Introduction:

renal cell carcinoma is a neoplasm with increasing incidence and mortality worldwide.

Objective:

to update the pharmacological treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma and to report on new experimental options.

Methods:

a search was carried out in the Medline, Web of Science and other databases, between the years 2018 and 2021 in the Spanish, English, French, German and Portuguese languages. The review was run using the descriptors: kidney cancer, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Original and review articles, web pages, doctoral and specialty ones and case reports were selected.

Results:

targeted therapies are the cornerstone of treatment for advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Immune checkpoint inhibitors transform your drug treatment and are the basis of most recent research. Adverse events are reported in both options.

Conclusions:

investigations are carried out that will provide new options based on combinations of targeted therapies with immunotherapy.
