BETANCOURT ABIO, Rafael. Contribution of Cuban Residents Abroad to the Cuban Economy: Tourism and Remittances. Rev Nov Pob [online]. 2023, vol.19, n.37, pp. 299-321. Epub 15-Jun-2023. ISSN 1817-4078.
Cuban residents abroad (CRE, for the Spanish acronym) form part of the great Cuban nation and constitute potential contributors to its development and welfare, particularly for the local development of their communities of origin and others to which they are linked. The areas of potential contribution are: tourism, remittances, foreign investment and international cooperation. In this article we analyze the first two. Using the method of analysis- synthesis of primary sources, the objective of the article is to analyze how travel and remittances of CRE to Cuba are expressed, and propose measures to facilitate and operationalize the contribution of Cuban migrants to the Cuban economy and society. We begin by characterizing the Cuban population residing in or on temporary stay abroad. As the second tourism market for Cuba, CRE travel constitutes a significant contribution to the local economy and the standard of living of the population. Well managed, tourism is a powerful tool for stimulating prosperity, quality of life and community development. Remittances, both monetary and in-kind, are similarly among the chief sources of foreign exchange for the country and particularly for the local economies. We explore the obstacles that hinder and diminish the maximum contribution of tourism and remittances to the economy and society, and we conclude with a set of recommendations for enhancing the contribution of CRE to their country of origin.
