HERNANDEZ CUBAS, Mario Orlando; YERA ALVAREZ, Osnielky e GONZALEZ RAMIREZ, José Javier. Appendicular mucocele diagnosed by videolaparoscopy. A case report. Acta méd centro [online]. 2020, vol.14, n.1, pp. 108-113. Epub 31-Mar-2020. ISSN 2709-7927.
Introduction:
the term appendicular mucocele refers to the cystic dilation of the lumen in the cecal appendix due to its obstruction and the consequent accumulation of mucus.
Case report:
a 59-year-old female patient who came to the consultation due to pain in flank and right iliac fossa, with several weeks of evolution, and without other accompanying symptoms. The case was discussed with Radiology specialists and in view of the impossibility of reaching a diagnosis, a laparoscopy was performed. It showed a thickened, turgid cecal appendix, which seemed to have liquid content inside. It was painful and without acute inflammatory signs. Due to these characteristics, the probable diagnosis was the existence of appendicular mucocele.
Conclusions:
although this is a rare disease, it is very important that both Internal Medicine and Surgery specialists take this disease into consideration in the differential diagnosis of any patient who has pain in the right iliac flank and fossa or has apalpable abdominal mass at this level.
