A historical review about the surgery of esophagus performed at the "General Calixto García" Teaching Hospital of Havana is presented. The first patients who underwent operations in Cuba of cervical esophagotomy, transpleurodiaphragmatic esophagogastrectomy, esophagogastrostomy, subtotal substitution of the esophagus with a skin tube placed subcutaneously, esophagocoloplasty, jejunoesophagoplasty, and gastroesophagoplasty are mentioned in this paper as well as the contributions made to the surgery of reflux esophagitis, to the early diagnosis and prevention of necrosis of the organ transposed in the esophagoplasty, and to the use of mechanical suture instruments in the esophagus surgery
