A retrospective, descriptive and analytical study was conducted, when required, in 102 patients with secondary and tertiary fibrinopurulent peritonitis admitted from July 2001 to September 2003 to general surgery service and intensive care unit of “Abel Santamaría Cuadrado” university general hospital in Pinar del Rio province from July 2001 to September 2003. Relaparatomy was performed as therapeutical procedure to define the resurgery criteria for patients affected by this disease. Variables of interest were considered for the assessment. Frequencies were compared by X2 statistic (95 % CI). The combination of clinical, humoral and imaging criteria was the most effective way of making a decision about re-operating a patient because of intrabdominal sepsis. The most frequent findings in relaparatomy were, by order of occurrence, intrabdominal collections, suture dehiscense and fibrinopurulent peritonitis. Mortality was 32 % of the total number, being multiorgan failure, septic shock and respiratory distress of the adult the most observed direct causes of death
