The essay examines the notebook Apuntes sobre un viaje a Oriente en 1831 y 1832 [Notes on a journey to the East in 1831 and 1832] by the Cuban José Luis Alfonso, Marqués de Montelo. This material has remained unpublished and ignored until now (it is preserved in the Manuscript Collection of the José Martí National Library) and constitutes a valuable testimony on the state of the ancient monuments of pre-classical Greece, as well as about the political events that were taking place at that time in that country. It is also an early exponent in our literature of the romantic sensibility in the specific genre of travel reports. The figure of its author has hardly been studied, in spite of being one of the most prominent men of the island and with an important and controversial political performance.
