Cuban higher education has a strategic role in the economic and social development of the country and its contributions are widely recognized. In this context, improving quality management has been a priority in Higher Education Institutions attached to the Ministry of Higher Education. Progress has been notable around this, but there are still shortcomings. In correspondence with these requirements, the objective of this article is to substantiate the relevance of a research project at presing running, where solution proposals are provided in a set of areas where there are possibilities for improvement. In its content, some theoretical foundations related to quality and its management in higher education and the main characteristics of the project are highlighted, emphasizing the objectives, the arguments that support the identified areas, the direction of the results and their contributions. It can be argued that the continuous improvement of quality management will be achieved from the possibility of conducting research that propose strategies and actions consistent with institutional and national requirements, and strengthen the organizational culture on the importance and need for its development.
