CRUZ HERNANDEZ, Jeddú et al. Contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2007, vol.23, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.
An updated review of contraception and its relation to the sexually transmitted infections was made. In the case of barrier contraceptives, they provide protection against these infections. It is also stressed that the hormonal contraceptives far from predisposing the appearance of a sexually transmitted infection, prevent the spreading. The intrauterine devices by themselves do not cause pelvic inflammation. The acquisition of this type of infection is facilitated by the sexual and responsible behavior. However, this type of contraception is not recommended for women with a disordered sexual practice. To conclude, it is obvious that no contraceptive method specially increases the risk for suffering from a sexually transmitted infection, but that in most of the situations it gives protection and, in the minority, they do not take part in its acquisition.
