Introduction:
Arterial hypertension is a chronic disease that requires continuous treatment; therefore, therapeutic adherence is the safest way to control it.
Objective:
To relate therapeutic adherence and perceived social support in patients with arterial hypertension.
Methods:
Descriptive and correlational study of case series carried out in Cecilio Ruíz de Zarate health area number 2 in Cienfuegos Province, in the period from September to December 2018. The study population was made up of a total of 11 574 patients arterial hypertension. Simple random sampling was performed (N=116). The instruments used to collect the information were the MBG (Martín-Bayarre-Grau) questionnaire for evaluating therapeutic adherence and the CAS-7 Social Support Questionnaire. The statistical analysis of the information was carried out in the database of the statistical package SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).
Results:
There was a prevalence of patients aged more than 60 years, of the male sex, with more than 10 years of natural history of the disease, who partially adhere to the treatment and perceive the need for instrumental and informational support.
Conclusions:
In the hypertensive patients of the study, there was no relationship between therapeutic adherence and perceived social support, results that explain the difficulties in adhering to antihypertensive treatment.
