HERNANDEZ LOPEZ, Iván et al. Objective quantification of opacification of posterior capsule by using Scheimpflug Pentacam tomograms. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2011, vol.24, n.2, pp. 208-219. ISSN 0864-2176.

Objectives: To objectively quantify the posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation by analyzing Scheimpflug Pentacam tomograms and to evaluate its relation with the subjective gradation by using slit lamp exam. Methods: Thirty five eyes were studied after cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation at Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology from March to September 2010. PCO was evaluated based on both slit lamp exam and Scheimpflug Images analysis. Correlation coefficients were calculated for both procedures. Results: Mean pixel-intensity value using Image J was 21.142. There was a significant positive correlation between PCO severity grade (P = 0.000; r = 0.961) by slit lamp gradation and PCO pixel intensity obtained from Pentacam tomograms analysis. A significant negative correlation was observed between best corrected visual acuity and both procedures. Conclusions: Scheimpflug tomograms analysis is an applicable method to obtain a factual and reliable indicator for PCO objective quantification.
