A cross-sectional research was carried out aimed at identifying the epidemiological behavior of diabetes mellitus in Güines municipality. To this end, it was determined the prevalence registered in 1990-2001, according to the registers of the Municipal Health Division. A sample of the diabetics categorized in this terriroty in 2001 was obtained. The universe was composed of 100 % of these patients (3 303) and the sample consisted of 362 of them (design by monostage conglomerates). The data were statistically processed by using the SPSS program. The prevalence registered increased in this period (from 20,67 x 1 000 inhabitants, in 1990, to 39,23 x 1 000, in 2001), Persons aged 60 or over an females prevailed. Average age was 57,48. Smoking was present in 76 diabetics (21 %) and sedentarism in 274 (75,7 %). It is recommended to take health actions directed to promote healthy life styles, to increase diet education in this population and to improve statistical information.
