Introduction: since ancient times, trauma events seize millions of human lives and cause incredible economic costs. Trauma is considered one of the leading causes of disability, economic loss and death; it is an unresolved pandemic in the modern era. Objective: to determine the epidemiological characteristics of injured patients seen at "Dr. Miguel Enríquez" hospital in 2012. Methods: longitudinal, observational, descriptive, prospective case-series type study conducted in 2012 which had trauma prognosis index "New Injury Severity Score” of over eight points. Results: among the total number of injured people (110), males predominated with 87 patients over 23 female patients. The weekend accounted for 58 % of the days when traumas occured whereas 18:00 to 05:59 represented 67 % of the time intervals when traumas were managed. Traffic accidents (49 patients) and stab wounds (41 patients) were the most common mechanisms of action. Conclusions: the epidemiological characteristics found in this study were similar to those of studies made in other countries; the main difference lies in the mechanism of injury.

Palavras-chave : trauma; epidemiology; type of mechanism of action.
