This article addresses the theoretical foundations of the non-formal educational dimension of local development from the perspective of sociological sciences. From the analysis-synthesis, induction-deduction and content analysis, the submission of the educational aspect was revealed, as well as its non-conception and explanation as an independent dimension, in the evolution of the dimensions related to this type of development. As a result of the theoretical systematization carried out, it is based on the Sociology of Education, in the field of the non-formal educational modality, Critical Pedagogy and Community Self-Development as the theoretical trends that support it.
