QUELLE SANTANA, Liliam et al. Morbidity in elderly people with disabilities at "Luis Pasteur" University Polyclinic. Infodir [online]. 2022, n.39  Epub 01-Dez-2022. ISSN 1996-3521.

Introduction:

Havana is the second most aged province in the country; in it, the "Diez de Octubre" municipality occupies the second place. The population served by the "Luis Pasteur" University Polyclinic is the oldest in this territory. It is unknown how many elderly people live with disabilities, their socio demographic and morbidity characteristics.

Objective:

To describe the elderly people with disabilities, their socio demographic and morbidity characteristics.

Methods:

A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out. A probabilistic sample was obtained, consisting of 448 elderly people, selected by two-stage cluster sampling, with probability proportional to size, to whom the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Program (WHODAS 2.0) instrument was applied. Summary measures were used for qualitative and quantitative variables, as well as the chi-squared test of independence and a two-stage cluster analysis was performed.

Results:

65.2% of the respondents had at least one degree of global disability. The female sex was represented by 54.5 %. The mean age was 73 years with a standard deviation of 8.1 years. 52.7 % had no partner and 54.7 % had no occupation. Morbidity due to circulatory diseases accounted for 64.3 %.

Conclusions:

The majority of older adults present global disability. They are associated with the morbidity groups of tumors, osteomyoarticular, circulatory, endocrine-metabolic, mental and respiratory diseases.
