PEREZ VEITIA, Jorge Luis e ARTEAGA GONZALEZ, Susana. Contribution of Physical Education to the education for peace in medical students. Rev EDUMECENTRO [online]. 2014, vol.6, n.2, pp. 127-141. ISSN 2077-2874.
Background: violence is a health problem. Therefore, it is incumbent upon public health, and especially, for doctors. Objective: to identify the potentialities that Physical Education implies for the introduction of an education for peace, based on its link with the extensional activity, and other subjects of the basic area in the Medical Faculty. Methods: the methodology used corresponds with the qualitative logic. This study covers a period from 2009 to 2012, and deals with the theoretical and methodological foundations about the this theme as a problem for health. The sample taken was composed of 92 first and second year students, and also 28 teachers from the Medical Faculty of the Villa Clara Medical University. The methods used, which correspond with the object of research in each phase, were, at the theoretical level: historical-logical, analytic-synthetic, and inductive-deductive; and among the empirical methods: survey, discussion groups, researcher's diary and participative action. Results: a characterization was obtained about the potentialities that exist in this subject to introduce the theme in the curriculum, including its content, offers of elective courses, and also within the extensional activity developed by the Physical Education subject. Conclusions: the existing potentialities to include the education for peace within the curriculum were identified, specifically within Physical Education, taking into account its duality as a subject of the basic area and its relationship with the extensional activity.
