Gaseous ozone can manifest germicidal, antioxidant and immune response actions. This research was conducted to evaluate the antiparasitic effect of the administration of medicinal ozone before or in parallel with the infection of BALB/c mice with Plasmodium berghei ANKA. Experiments with this model assessed redox status in sera resulting from infection against healthy controls, as well as parasitemias, body weights and survival curves in the course of infection, in mice not treated and treated with ozone. Artemisinine at 25 mg/kg was used as reference. Infection at d4 showed significant differences (p<0.05) in serum concentrations of redox indicators of infected and healthy controls. Pre-treatment with 0.3; 1.5 and 2.5 mg/kg of ozone reflected similarity in initial body weights and at the end of the scheme (p>0.05). With 2.5 mg/kg of ozone, the parasitemia was lower at d4 (p<0.05). A significant decrease in body weight was detected in negative controls since d7 (p<0.05) which was accentuated at d10 (p<0.05); while only significant decrease at d10 was recorded in pre-treated with 0.3 and 1.5 mg/kg of ozone (p <0.05). Correspondingly, the survival curves obtained with ozone contributed to medians higher than negative control. On the contrary, treatment with 0.3 and 2.5 mg/kg of ozone posterior to infection (p.i) significantly increased parasitaemia at d4 (p <0.05). Comparable initial and final body weights (p> 0.05) of mice in the scheme with ozone p.i were found and the ozone survival curves showed similarity to the negative control. This suggests that ozone generated insufficient amount of derivatives for an immediate antiparasitic effect; only ozone administered before infection manifested an effect against it, so it is necessary to investigate the mechanisms involved.
