VALDES SARDINAS, Sonia Amalia et al. Smoking and its association with adolescent oral health. Acta méd centro [online]. 2020, vol.14, n.1, pp. 44-52. Epub 31-Mar-2020. ISSN 2709-7927.
Introduction:
smoking increases in line with the development of today’s society, especially in adolescence; this practice is associated with a wide variety of harmful changes in the oral cavity.
Objective:
to describe the conditions caused by smoking in the oral health of adolescents.
Method:
a cross-sectional descriptive study (quantitative and qualitative techniques and methods were used) was carried out from October 2016 to May 2018. A sample of 144 tenth and eleventh grade teenagers from the Ernesto Che Guevara Pre- University Institute was selected by simple random sampling, and a survey and oral examination were applied to them.
Results:
there was a predominance of 17-year-old male adolescents. The main factors associated with smoking were the cariogenic diet and poor oral hygiene. Adolescents with a poor level of information prevailed.
Conclusions:
there was a predominance of male adolescent smokers aged 17 years who were mostly affected by periodontal disease and dental caries. Poor oral hygiene and consumption of cariogenic diet were the main risk factors. The level of information was poor in most of the sample.
