RODRIGUEZ CALZADILLA, Orlando L.; PEREZ ALVAREZ, Mayra de la Caridad; PEREZ PEREZ, Oviedo e NODARSE RODRIGUEZ, Mario. Experiencies in the application of biomaterials in maxillofacial surgery. Rev Cubana Estomatol [online]. 2006, vol.43, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-297X.
A prospective longitudinal study was undertaken to prove the effectiveness of Apafill-G, HAP-2000 and Tisuacryl, biomaterials obtained in Cuba for bone implants in osteolytic maxillofacial lesions, as a filling of the osteal cavity and in the closure of facial wounds and of the oral mucosa originated by trauma or surgical treatment, and to made them known and useful in the institutions, dental services and its specialties. A total of 389 patients were surgically treated. The most used biomaterial was Tisuacryl, followed by Apafill-G and HAP 2000. The predominating surgical treatments were the multiple extractions, auricular plasty, osteal maxillary and mandibular irregularity, retained tooth and periapical surgery. The patients that underwent surgery showed a satisfactory clinical and radiographic evolution. It was concluded that the application of these biomaterials produced in Cuba regarding the closure of wounds of the soft tissues and the filling of osteal cavities is an alternative treatment in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The Cuban hydroxyapatite (Apafill-G and HAP-2000) used in this study has a high biocompatibility and biofunctionability that make it an ideal implant material. Adverse reactions were not reported in the studied patients.
