FIGUEROA HERNANDEZ, Reinerio et al. Development reached by the province of Cienfuegos. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2001, vol.27, n.3, pp. 191-198. ISSN 1561-3062.

It is known that pediatric and adolescent gynecology is part of the gynecologist’s daily practice. After the training of several specialists in the City of Havana province, this service began to be provided under the guidance of Dr Jorge Pélaez. This paper analyzed the results achieved from 1997 to 1999. The descriptive correlational method was used to determine the number of patients seen at the pediatric and adolescent gynecology outpatient service. There was an increase in the number of cases seen in 1998 (+121), but this figure slightly dropped in 1990, with a higher number of appointments offered. The main reasons to go to the doctor´s were firstly leukorrea and vulvovaginitis(26,8%); secondly, menstruation disorders (15,1%). Genital malformations and family planning were excluded. The contraceptive methods used by our adolescents were analyzed, being barrier contraceptives, the pills and the intrauterine devices the most used. The paper also showed the work carried out as to differentiated pregnancy termination in adolescents; there was a substantial reduction of pregnancy terminations but the menstrual regulations grew in number, which partly affected the work to prevent abortion.
