A descriptive analytical study was conducted on patients with hypertensive disease of pregnancy, classified according to the criteria of the American College of Obstetric, in "Julio R. Alfonso Medina" teaching gynecological and obstetric hospital in Matanzas from January 1998 to December 2000. The sample was made up of 956 women. Primary data were collected from the medical histories and from the register book. The variables were processed by the statistical method and the percentage and the median were estimated. The 30-40 years-old female group showed the highest incidence; the urban population was predominant. According to the above-mentioned classification, hypertension type II was the most frequent and type III exhibited the highest number of primitive cesarean sections.
