Introduction: the low birth weight is at world scale the more important index to determine the possibilities of newborn of survive with a healthy growth. The neonates with low birth weight account for the 60 % of the neonatal mortality and close to 4 % of infantile mortality. The economic-social structures of countries and the priorities that government grant to social progress determine that reduction of the low weight be or not a social problem. Objectives: to determine the incidence and the behavior of the mortality of the low birth weight newborn in the Centro Habana municipality Ciudad de La Habana province from 1995 to 2009. As statistical precedents, authors used the percentage method, the rates, the trend analysis and the Pearson `linear correlation. Results: during study period there was a total of 23 575 live-born including 1 503 with low birth weight. Sepsis was the leading cause of death. Conclusions: more than a half of deceased during the neonatal period had low birth weight. The low birth weight newborns and those deceased aged less than 28 days showed a progressive decrease with time. Sepsis was the leading cause in 23.2 % of death.
