HERNANDEZ PEDROSO, Wilfredo; RITTOLES NAVARRO, Aliuska; JOANES FIOL, Javier  e  GARCIA HERNANDEZ, Ramón. Estado nutricional en el paciente quirúrgico grave. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2000, vol.29, n.2, pp. 84-88. ISSN 1561-3046.

Stress in surgical patients brings about changes in their nutritional status that may affect their recovery. For this reason, 50 critical surgical patients admitted to the ICU of "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto" Higher Institute of Military Medicine were studied. Anthropometric (tricipital fold, arm circumference, weight and height), biochemical (serum albumin and urine creatinine) and immunological (lymphocyte count) tests were made at the time of admission and at 7 and 15 days of their stay at hospital. 52% of patients presented on admission an unsatisfactory nutritional status. Mixed malnutrition was the most frequent form. In the tests conducted, the decrease of tricipital fold, arm circumference and serum albumin were statistically significant on discharge from hospital. There was no direct relation between the nutritional status and the condition of patient on discharge.
