HERNANDEZ PEDROSO, Wilfredo et al. Catabolismo proteico en el paciente politraumatizado. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2000, vol.29, n.3, pp. 157-161. ISSN 1561-3046.
Protein catabolism has gained importance because it brings about the loss of body cell mass and is related with morbidity and mortality of patients under stress. Fifty critical surgical patients admitted to the ICU of "Luis Díaz Soto" Higher Institute of Military Medicine were studied. These patients had been hospitalized for 15 days as minimum and were measured their arm perimeter, urine, nitrogen and creatinine as well as urea and serum albumin. Measurements were made at admission, at 7 days and 15 days of stay at hospital. Brachial perimeter and serum albumin values progressively declined and the lowest figures were those of dead patients. Serum albumin in the deceased after 15 days of stay was 31.6 g/L whereas survivors showed 34.1 g/L. The oxidized protein per kilogram was 2.1 in dead people and 1.7 g/kg in survivor patients. Overall mortality rate was 28%.
