DE LA CRUZ-VELIZ, Laura Monserrate; ESPINOSA-CASTANO, Ivette; BAEZ-ARIAS, Michel  e  LOBO-RIVERO, Evelyn. Bordetella avium and Escherichia coli in broilers in Manabí province, Ecuador. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.2 ISSN 2224-4700.

The Avian Respiratory Complex (ARC), is one of the most frequent problems in poultry. Its etiology is multifactorial and includes combinations of microorganisms, nutritional and environmental factors. Among the microbial agents, viruses, mycoplasmas and bacteria of the following genera and species: Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Bordetella avium, Pasteurella multocida and Escherichia coli, are reported. The objective of this study was to identify the presence of these bacteria in samples from broilers with symptoms compatible with the disease. To this end, 60 tracheal exudates of chickens belonging to four farms in Manabí province, Ecuador, were analyzed. The samples were identified by phenotypic (cultural, dye and biochemical) and genotypic tests by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Five samples (8 %) tested positive for these bacteria, of which four corresponded to B. avium and one isolate to E. coli. The susceptibility profile revealed that both species were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and kanamycin, while they were resistant to amoxicillin and chloramphenicol. This study is the first evidence confirming the presence of these bacteria in broilers in Manabí province, Ecuador.
